Routine adult
Adult pneumococcal immunisation (conjugate and/or polysaccharide, per current schedule). Strongly recommended for adults 65+ and younger adults with chronic disease.
Who should get it
- Adults 65 years and older
- Adults 19–64 with diabetes, heart, lung, liver, or kidney disease, HIV, or asplenia
- People who smoke or have alcohol-use disorder (risk-based)
Who should wait
- Moderate/severe acute illness — defer
Contraindications
- Anaphylaxis to a previous pneumococcal vaccine or a diphtheria-toxoid-containing vaccine (for PCV)
Precautions
- PPSV23 is less immunogenic if given too soon after PCV — pharmacist follows interval rules
